State Genetic Services

Genetics is a rapidly growing area in health and medicine. While still very important in the diagnosis and management of birth defects and rare disorders, genetics is also a factor in many common conditions. Every day, more and more is learned about the role genetics plays in diseases like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

The Wisconsin State Genetics Program strives to make sure Wisconsin families and health care providers are aware of and have access to the genetic services available in the state. To achieve this, the Genetics Program works with several other public health programs to make sure necessary and important genetic information is appropriately available, including:

• Newborn Screening
• Birth Defects Prevention & Surveillance
• Chronic Disease and Cancer Prevention
• Nutrition / WIC Program
• Wisconsin Sound Beginnings
• Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs

A genetic counselor is available as a resource to families and health care providers and can answer questions, provide referrals to genetics services, or offer education and training to those interested.
