The 14 Carrot Gold Award recognizes excellence in the
promotion of increased fruit and vegetable consumption in Wisconsin.
The award is a joint effort of the Wisconsin WIC Program, the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program
and
the Wisconsin
Nutrition and Physical Activity Program.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identify increased fruit
and vegetable consumption as a strategy to prevent and reduce the overweight and
obesity problem in the nation.
Award Winners for 2009
Pat Phair and Terry Kramer, Waupaca High School for the Waupaca
Community/School Garden that provides fresh produce, along with nutrition
information, at charitable outlets in the community.
Toni Rogers, UW-Extension Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program (WNEP),
Nutrition Coordinator, Iron County for the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry and
Community Garden that provides access to fresh produce, healthy recipes and food
safety information to pantry recipients.
Paulette Flynn, SHARE Wisconsin for access improvements which include
accepting food orders online and the SHARE Express program -- which brings
mobile food sales, including fresh fruits and vegetables, to underserved
communities in the Milwaukee area.
Barbara Martin and the Friends of the Dane County Farmers' Market for
the "School on the Square" and the "Farmers' Market FoodShare
Program" that provide education about local produce and Electronic Benefits
Transfer (EBT) of FoodShare benefits at the farmers' market.
Jill McCauley, Traditions on Chestnut LLC, Marshfield for providing
hands-on education and teaching in the kitchen about fruits and vegetables to
adults, families, children and scouting classes.
Dot Kalmon, Marla Hill and Amanda Ostrowski, Marathon County Health
Department for the "Footprints to Health Summer Program" which
presented information to area youth and families regarding fruits and vegetables
and physical activity.
Shari Winter, Healthy People Project of Washington County for
providing convenient and affordable access to fruits and vegetables to the
community through implementation of farmers' markets at local workplaces.
Honorable Mentions
Scott Krueger, Menominee Tribal Clinic WIC and Diabetes Prevention Program
for the Menominee Gardening Coalition, which increases access to fresh fruits
and vegetables and gardening projects across the reservation.
John McHugh, Kwik Trip, Inc., LaCrosse for the "Fruits and
Vegetables at the Convenience Store" project, which improved selection and
lowered the prices of fruits and vegetables.
Sandy Leffler, The Garden Shop, Grant County for a farmstand at a WIC
clinic that offered fresh produce along with recipes and nutrition information.
Mary Premo, Michelle Johnson and Amy Beaver, Adams County UW-Extension
Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program (WNEP) and the Adams Friendship
School District for the "Middle School Garden Lunch" project,
which gave out school garden samples during lunch.
Kathryn Cieszki, UW-Extension Nutrition Education Program, West Allis
for "A Smile A Snack Healthy School Snack Program", which offered
nutrition education and fruits and vegetables after students walked a mile.
