"My name is Brian Castillo, and Iíve had the great fortune of growing

I became enthralled with photography years after inheriting a
camera of my Fatherís. This led to the inclusion of several works in
Madison East yearbooks from which I graduated from in 2003. I graduated
from Northland College in Ashland, WI with a degree in Outdoor Education
(emphasizing therapeutic and universal design). My college studies led me
to picturesque locations including Alaska, Colorado, Utah, California and
eventually back to the south shore of Lake Superior, where I graduated in
Amidst the travels and several thousands of photos later I was
presented with an opportunity to revisit a childhood dream involving one
of my other dedicated passions in life - kayaking. Being introduced to
paddle sports at a young age my independence flourished and enabled me to
look at the world from a different perspective Ė that at water level.
Moving at the human powered speed allows time for contemplation and
composition of your surroundings.
At the same time it enables spontaneity,
especially when armed with a camera. This triad of contemplation,
composition and spontaneity laid the foundation for the Superior Session
images presented here. In 2008 I circumnavigated Lake Superior by sea
kayak with my partner, Alissa.
Through dozens of days on the water I was
able to experience a simple existence, one not dictated by schedules or
agendas, rather enjoying a journey, one day at a time. The images
displayed here, are a reflection of that simple time, where composition
and spontaneity could tune out the rigors of everything else and one could
contemplate the true beauty in life.
