"Second graders at Lapham Elementary School, Madison, WI, have celebrated winter by creating winter snow scenes. We began the lesson by talking about some of the things the kids love to do in the winter: sled, make snowmen, ski, ice skate, throw snowballs, and make snow angels, to name a few. The students were given many simple images of people engaged in these winter activities. After a demonstration by the art teacher, the students drew their own snow scenes, first with pencil and then outlining with black marker. Then the students colored in their people and snowmen with oil crayons, and then they were ready to paint the snow! The students painted the snow on the hills, and they painted the falling snow with white paint on their fingertips. These winter scenes were on display at Lapham School as part of their "Fine Arts Night" earlier this winter. We're pleased that they now get to be displayed at DHS!

In addition to the winter scenes, the second graders at Lapham currently have their multi-media cats on display at Java Cat Cafe, located on Monona Drive in Madison. These "Kitties by Kiddos" will be there at least through the end of March, so stop by to see these "cool cats"!

And, if you happen to be near the Madison Square, you'll also want to see the first grade Lapham students' self portraits, which are on display at the Madison Children's Museum."

    – Kimberly Wilson, Art Teacher, Lapham Elementary School
NOTE: Lapham Elementary School originally provided DHS with 27 winter scene paintings. However, due to excellent reception, the collection now consists of 60 paintings. As a special treat for the Lapham pen pals, members of the DHS art display team took photos of the DHS pen pals next to their Lapham student’s artwork. These photos were then printed out and given to the Lapham pen pal students and their DHS pen pals. The DHS pen pals also provided comments about the winter scenes in their “pen pal notebooks” to share with their Lapham pen pals.
