How do I get an application to test?

From the Internet, you can print the "Application for Competency Evaluation" (exit DHS; PDF, 81 KB) from http://www.pearsonvue.com/ (exit DHS)

How can I prepare for the Nurse Aide Competency Test?

You can call the American Red Cross (ARC) toll-free at (866) 257-5424 to request the Application for Competency Evaluation.

How do I complete section 5 of the Application for Competency Evaluation, that asks for my training program number?

Section 5 of the "Application for Competency Evaluation" (exit DHS; PDF, 81 KB) must be completed by newly trained nurse aide candidates only.

Only candidates applying under Eligibility Route E-1 must complete Section 5. If you recently completed a nurse aide training program, your nurse aide training program primary instructor will assist you and complete section 5 of the application form.

Where do I find the Regional Test Site codes and city information?

You can get the list of Regional Test Sites (exit DHS; PDF, 52 KB) via http://www.pearsonvue.com/ (exit DHS)

If you do not have Internet access, you can find the test site code and test location on Page 8 of the Candidate Handbook. You may list as many as three different choices of test site locations under Sections 6 of the application form.

You will be scheduled at the test site at the earliest available date.

If you leave the test site code blank, you will be scheduled for an exam at a location closest to your home address.

How do I schedule an exam?

You must send the completed application with the appropriate fee to ARC:

  • $115 written and skills exams
  • $115 oral and skills exams
  • $70 skills only
  • $45 written only
  • $45 oral only

Please designate on the form which exam(s) you need to take.

Your examination fee may be paid by MasterCard, Visa, or in the form of a money order, company check or certified check, payable to "ARC."

Personal checks will not be accepted.

Do I have to submit the fee with the application?

Yes, if you do not submit the appropriate fee, you will not be scheduled for an exam and your application will be returned.

Can I submit a voucher?

Promissor has established a pre-paid non-refundable voucher payment process for state agencies, employment agencies, training programs, etc.

To obtain pre-paid vouchers, submit a written request with a certified check, company check or money order for the number of vouchers you would like to purchase to:

Is the exam offered in another language besides English?

The written and oral exams are given in English.

However, if you will be working in a provider setting where English is not the predominant language, the exam may be given in the predominant language used in that setting.

If you meet those requirements and wish to take the exam in another language, include that information on your application.

I have a disability. How do I request special accommodations to my testing due to my disability?

If you have a disability, you may request special arrangements for testing when you apply. All requests must be approved in advance by ARC.

The Nurse Aide Evaluator cannot approve special accommodation requests on the day of the testing.

Be sure to explain the specific type of help you need and enclose proof of your need for an accommodation.

This could be in the form of a statement from your health care provider or your special education Individual Education Plan (IEP), as approved through your school district.

How will I know where and when the exam will be?

If you are taking the exam at a Regional Test Site (exit DHS; PDF, 52 KB), you will receive an Admission letter in the mail within 12-14 days of receipt of the completed application.

This letter indicates the date, time and place of the scheduled test. Be sure to bring this letter with you to the exam.

If you do not receive an Admission letter within ten (10) days of the date you submitted your application, call ARC toll-free at (866) 257-5424.

If your training program is an approved In-Facility Test Site, your primary instructor will notify you of the date, time and place of your scheduled exam within 5-7 days after Pearson Vue receives the completed application.

How do I cancel a scheduled exam?

You must call ARC toll-free at (866) 257-5424 at least four (4) business days prior to the test date.

I missed my scheduled exam. Do I have to pay again to schedule another exam?

If you called ARC at least four (4) business days in advance to reschedule, you will not have to pay an additional fee.

If you missed your exam and have an acceptable excused absence, you will not have to pay again.

Your request must include proof of the reason for the absence. Acceptable excused absences include:

  • Your illness or illness of an immediate family member
  • Death in the family
  • Disabling traffic accident
  • Court appearance or jury duty
  • Military duty
  • Weather emergency

Requests for excused absences must be made in writing and mailed within ten (10) business days following the exam date.

If you do not call ARC at least four (4) business days before your scheduled test or do not have an acceptable reason for the excused absence, you will have to pay again to reschedule your exam.
