Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

  • There are approximately 158,000 cases of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) among adults in Wisconsin.

  • Most individuals with COPD are current or former smokers in their 50s and 60s.

  • Individuals with the inherited form of COPD have symptoms in their 30s and 40s.

  • Many of the people with COPD are older men, but the condition is increasing among women. Males with COPD outnumber females by 22%.

  • Smoking causes 80% of emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other chronic lung diseases.

  • On average, there are 6,500 hospitalizations and 1,900 deaths per year from COPD.
