The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has
been conducting asthma surveillance activities since 1992 and asthma
interventions since 1994. Since 2001 the Wisconsin Asthma Program has
expanded its activities under a cooperative agreement with the US Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2003, the Wisconsin Asthma Plan was
adopted to provide the blueprint for addressing asthma as a public health
priority, and lists the prioritized goals, objectives, and activities
recommended for statewide action to reduce the burden of asthma in
Wisconsin
. The Wisconsin Asthma Program serves as both staff and member to
the Wisconsin Asthma Coalition, which has been accomplishing many of its
goals through various activities addressed within the Wisconsin Asthma
Plan.
Priorities
-
Maintain and expand asthma surveillance efforts
-
Facilitate implementation of the Wisconsin Asthma Plan
-
Prioritize and implement public health interventions
for asthma
-
Build local capacity to identify, evaluate and
implement actions
To achieve these goals, the program will continue to
conduct surveillance, maintain and enhance partnerships and implement
priority interventions identified in the Wisconsin Asthma Plan.
Wisconsin Asthma Plan
The Wisconsin
Asthma Plan 2009-2014 (PDF, 5.5 MB) was approved by the DHS
Secretary and the Wisconsin Asthma Coalition in May of 2009. The overarching
goals of the plan are:
-
Expand and improve the quality of asthma education,
prevention, management and services, and
-
Decrease the disproportionate burden of asthma in
disparately impacted populations.
The plan addresses all persons with asthma, regardless of gender, age,
race/ethnicity or geographic area, and priorities for key environments in
which persons with asthma spend significant amounts of time, such as homes,
schools and workplaces, are included.
