State Agencies with Health Care Responsibilities

Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has many responsibilities including child welfare, long term care, physical and developmental disability programs, sensory disability programs, mental health, public health, BadgerCare Plus (exit DHS) , Medicaid, regulation and licensing of a variety of programs and facilities, and operation of care and treatment facilities.

Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance regulates and monitors health insurance plans and health maintenance organizations.

Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds  operates the health benefit program for Wisconsin state employees and retirees.

Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing has responsibility for licensing most health care professionals including doctors, nurses, dentists, podiatrists, and chiropractors.

Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH): offers laboratory services in clinical (human), environmental, and occupational health, as well as proficiency testing programs for public and private laboratories.

The Division of Consumer Protection in the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is one place to turn if you have a complaint about unfair or deceptive business practices. These may include medical billing problems, medical discount plans (PDF, 45 KB), free or low cost prescription drugs (PDF, 35 KB) and medical quackery.
