There are a number of federal and state student loan repayment and scholarship programs designed to recruit and retain health professionals in areas that have shortages of providers. These programs include:

Health Care Providers with Service Obligations, January 2011 (PDF, 650 KB) This map displays the number of full time equivalents (FTE) fulfilling a service obligation in a state or federal loan repayment program or the J-1 visa waiver program by county of their primary work site. This is a mix of primary care, dental, and mental health professionals.
