Wisconsin Primary Care Programs

CLINICIANS/STUDENTS

NHSC Scholarship program(exit DHS) Payment of tuition, fees and certain other educational expenses for students in certain health professions education programs (dentists, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians, advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants), in exchange for working at a clinic in a high-need shortage area at least two years. - Clinics must provide financial access to care and meet other NHSC site requirements.

Students can sign up for email notification to receive an alert regarding when the program will begin accepting applications for the 2011-2012 school year (the deadline for the 2010-2011 year has passed).

NHSC Loan repayment program(exit DHS) Repayment of student educational loans for certain health professionals (primary care, dental and mental health) in exchange for working at a clinic in a high-need shortage area for at least two years. - Clinics must provide financial access to care and meet other NHSC site requirements.

NHSC loan repayment program is accepting applications until May 26, 2011. There is an online portion of the application and supporting documents that need to be mailed or faxed to NHSC. All application materials must be received by the closing date.

Work sites must also become NHSC approved to be eligible for a clinician to receive loan repayment or a scholar to complete their service. To see currently approved NHSC sites please check here and select Wisconsin from the drop-down menu:  National Health Service Corps Approved Sites (exit DHS)

To see if sites not already approved are in a HPSA check here:  Find Shortage Areas:  HPSA/MUA/P by address (exit DHS)

NHSC hosts a Job Opportunities List (JOL) which posts current vacancies at NHSC approved sites. Persons can do a general search or target by state and discipline area.

The Wisconsin Primary Care Program coordinates NHSC recruitment assistance in the state by helping:

  • Disseminate information about NHSC resources to clinics, clinicians, and other state partners,
  • Clinics submit their site applications to NHSC,
  • The NHSC verify the eligibility of site applications from clinics,
  • Clinicians identify vacancies eligible for loan repayment or scholar placements.

For more information about eligibility and applications for National Health Service Corps recruitment assistance, contact:

Wisconsin Health Professions Loan Assistance Program

  • This is a loan repayment program only, no scholarships
  • It is administered by the Office of Rural Health (exit DHS)
  • For most recent program information, eligibility, and application information please contact Kevin Jacobson at kmjacobson2@wisc.edu

VERY IMPORTANT
Clinicians cannot participate in both the NHSC and HPLAP programs at the same time. They can however complete service to one program and then apply to the other one if they still have outstanding qualifying loans.
