There are a number of federal and state student loan repayment and scholarship programs designed to encourage health professionals to work in areas that have shortages of providers.  These programs include:

National Health Service Corps (NHSC): (exit DHS)  NHSC is a federal program that was established to improve the health of underserved communities and vulnerable populations by coordinating the recruitment and retention of certain primary care professionals to Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA). These recruitment efforts materialize in the form of loan repayment for eligible clinicians who are currently practicing, scholarships for students in eligible clinical disciplines, and recruitment and retention resources for eligible sites.

National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment program accepting applications now until May 26, 2011. 

The program has undergone exciting changes such as increasing the award amounts and increased flexibility in service commitments with a full-time and part-time option!

Wisconsin Health Professions Loan Assistance Program (HPLAP)(exit DHS)  State loan repayment program, coordinated by the Office of Rural Health, to recruit and retain clinicians to HPSA areas in Wisconsin. The HPLAP offers loan repayment to eligible clinicians practicing in a HPSA.

Nursing Education Loan Repayment (NELREP)(exit DHS)
The federal Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program is a competitive program that can repay up to 60% of the qualifying loan balance of registered nurses selected for funding in exchange for 2 years of service at a critical shortage facility.  Participants may be eligible to work a 3rd year and receive repayment of an additional 25% of the qualifying loan balance.
