Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is "A combination of procedures, methods and tools by which a policy, programme or project may be judged as to its potential effects on the health of a population, and the distribution of those effects within the population." European Centre for Health Policy, WHO Regional Office for Europe. Gothenburg Consensus Paper (1999). (exit DHS, PDF, 138 KB)

The full report (PDF, 150 KB) of Wisconsin's first year of HIA activities is now available.

Check out the Wisconsin HIA Factsheet, (PDF, 377 KB) which provides an overview of the HIA framework and the many potential benefits of HIA.

The final webinar, Putting HIA Into Action (Webcast, help), in the three part series is available online.

More information about the webinar series is available.

The major steps in conducting an HIA include:

Screening: Determines the need and value of a HIA

Scoping: Determines which health impacts to evaluate, methods for analysis, and a workplan

Assessment: Involves profiling existing health conditions, measuring potential health impacts and identifying strategies to manage identified adverse health impacts

Reporting: Includes the development of the HIA report and communication of findings and recommendations

Monitoring: Quantifies impacts on decision-making processes, the decision, and health determinants
