Refugee Health Program
In collaboration with refugee resettlement
agencies, local health departments, and private health care
providers
the Wisconsin Refugee Program:
- Assures all new refugees receive a comprehensive health assessment
upon arrival in the U.S.
- Provides information to public health providers on
specific health concerns of various refugee populations
- Advocates for culturally competent care delivery and
the use of qualified medical interpreters for quality assurance
- Links refugee health concerns with the mission of
other programs within the Wisconsin Division of Public Health
If an individual is identified as a
Refugee, Asylee, Cuban/Haitian Entrant, Victim of Trafficking, or an
Amerasian, they are eligible for refugee health screening. The cost
of this screening is covered by refugee medical assistance
funds.
Health Screening
Refugee health screening includes screening for communicable diseases
(such as TB, Hepatitis B, sexually transmitted infections),
immunizations, oral health and lead screening, blood work and evaluation
of chronic conditions identified during refugees' overseas medical exam.It is paid for either by Refugee Medical
Assistance or Medical Assistance. In Wisconsin refugee
screening is often a partnership between local health departments and
private providers. Local health departments have contracts with the
Department of Workforce Development, Immigration Integration Section. This
office is the designated channel for federal refugee funding in the state.
Refugee
Services (Exit DHS) provided
through the Immigration Integration Section, reimburses local health departments
for services they provide with federal Refugee Medical Assistance funds. Private providers bill Medicaid directly for the
services they provide.
