October is Children's
Health Month (exit DHS). EPA has developed materials (fact sheets and
posters) to promote this observance. Lead poisoning is among other
home-based environmental health concerns for children. Actions can
be taken to prevent health problems due to these concerns, actions
such as getting children tested for lead exposure and looking around
for chipping and peeling paint. Other actions to promote healthy
homes include testing homes for radon, installing carbon monoxide
and smoke detectors, eliminating asthma triggers like mold, mildew
and tobacco smoke, and discarding mercury thermometers.
