Alcohol and Drugs
Alcohol and drugs: disparities and resources
According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health,
about 8% of Americans use illegal drugs, and 20% of Americans binge drink.
Data from Wisconsin indicate that the rate of alcohol and drug use among
the LGBT community may be even higher. For example, when compared to their
heterosexual counterparts:
LGBT youth are:
- 1.6 times as likely try alcohol before the age of 13; and
- 3 times as likely to use hard drugs.
LGBT adults are:
- twice as likely to binge drink; and
- nearly 5 times as likely to ride in or drive a car when the driver has had
too much to drink.
The following resources are intended to address drug and alcohol use in
the LGBT community.
