Educators
Schools
can provide support, safety, and education that encourage social,
emotional, and physical development in youth. However, data from Wisconsin
indicate that LGBT youth may not experience the same educational
benefits as their other peers. When compared to their non-LGBT peers, LGBT youth are less likely to agree that their teachers really
care about them and to feel a sense of belonging at school. They are more likely
to skip school because they feel unsafe. Additionally, they are at
risk for experiencing adverse health outcomes. When compared to their non-LGBT
peers, LGBT youth are more likely to attempt suicide, smoke, initiate sex at a younger age, and are less likely to report support
from parents and teachers.
The following resources are intended to increase awareness among
educators of health issues and disparities affecting LGBT youth. Use the
