New Guidelines Require FDA Review of Tobacco Products
The U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a
guideline to tobacco companies informing them that starting March 22,
2011, they will be required by law to report changes to any of their
existing products or any new products to the FDA for review and approval.
Changes may include ingredients, design, and other components of
cigarettes. The new disclosure requirement applies to all tobacco
products introduced after February 15, 2007. This marks the first
time a federal agency will have access into changes made by tobacco
companies and the first time the companies will be required to explain the
purpose and effects of product changes. For more information, visit
the FDA
guidelines (Exit DHS).
Compliance Data for the Wisconsin Smoke-Free
Law
In anticipation of Wisconsin's smoke-free law, the
Wisconsin Tobacco Prevention and Control Program set up the 1-800-NO SMOKE
hotline and www.WIBetterSmokeFree.com
(exit DHS) website for Wisconsin residents to report business
non-compliance with the law. The fact sheet below lists the total number
of reports filed since July 5, 2010, as well as a break down by month. This
number includes non-compliance reports filed through the hotline, website,
and by local health sanitarians.
