One-on-One Basic Cancer Abstracting

Facility-level training is being offered at the WCRS headquarters in Madison. This gives individual facilities the opportunity to learn abstracting using their own facility's medical records. It gives participants the chance to learn where to find the necessary information in the medical record that must be abstracted into the cancer abstract. It also gives participants practice in abstracting. The WCRS trainer spends the day with the trainees, guiding them through the abstract and answering questions to help them better understand the cancer abstract and its contents. For further information, please contact Carole Eberle, WCRS Trainer, at carolynn.eberle@dhs.wisconsin.gov or 608-261-8388.

WCRS Reporting Updates for 2012; and Downstream from the Registry: A User's Perspective

Two webcasts, WCRS Updates for 2012 and Downstream from the Registry: A User's Perspective, are available for viewing. The WCRS Updates webcast includes required field updates for 2012 reporting and discusses other important issues related to data release, timeliness and completeness of reporting. The second webcast provides information on how researchers use WCRS data and discusses problems encountered in interpreting cancer data when the data are incomplete or reported late. Incomplete or late reporting can often affect not only research but funding and policy decisions for many organizations.

Both webcasts were first presented at the Wisconsin Cancer Registrars Association annual meeting on October 6-7, 2011.

Abstract Plus Version 3

The Abstract Plus Version 3 webcast is required for all staff responsible for data entry using this software. Included in this webcast:

  • What's New in Version 3?
  • Menu Bars and Display Screen Review
  • Edits Review
  • Data Entry Demonstration
  • Installation and Import/Export Features
  • Login/Backup Information

This webcast was originally taped in November 2010. While some of the dates and references in the webcast have passed, the information shared and demonstrated reflects what is in the current product, with no changes.

Changes to State Reporting Requirements - 2011

Only four data items were modified/added to the state reporting requirements for 2011 diagnoses. Three of the data items are additions to site-specific factors for collaborative staging. The fourth is a treatment field: Reason for No Radiation. Please refer to the April 2011 WCRS Updates newsletter, Attachment 1: 2011 State Reporting Requirement Changes (PDF, 140 KB), to review the reporting requirements for 2011 in detail.

The changes are also reflected in the WCRS Abstract Code Manual, reporting form and reporting form "cheat sheet." These documents are available for download on the Coding Resources page.
