LGBT Health: Alcohol and Drugs

Alcohol and drugs: disparities and resources

According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, about 8% of Americans use illegal drugs, and 20% of Americans binge drink. Data from Wisconsin indicate that rates of alcohol and drug use among the LGBT community may be even higher. For example, when compared to their heterosexual counterparts:

LGBT youth are:

  • 1.6 times as likely try alcohol before the age of 13.
  • Three times as likely to use hard drugs.

LGBT adults are:

  • Twice as likely to binge drink.
  • Nearly five times as likely to ride in or drive a car when the driver has had too much to drink.
