Unauthorized Access: Potential Impact to Certain Individuals Who Received Services From Wisconsin Medicaid

On July 8, 2022, Gainwell Technologies LLC (Gainwell) announced that on May 5, 2022, an unauthorized individual gained access to an account belonging to a health care provider enrolled with Wisconsin’s Medicaid program. This access may have exposed the names, member identification numbers, and billing codes for services received by affected members of Wisconsin Medicaid. Gainwell provides fiscal-agent services for the Medicaid program administered by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS).

After discovering what happened on May 11, 2022, Gainwell terminated the unauthorized access. Gainwell and DHS then took prompt action to investigate and requested assistance from federal law enforcement agencies. Gainwell and DHS continue to work together to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

On July 8th, 2022, notifications were mailed to 1,698 Wisconsin Medicaid members whose information may have been accessed. These members have been offered free credit monitoring for one year as well as given access to a dedicated call center to answer questions they might have.

Members who received a notification letter or have questions about this incident, can call 800-939-4170 from 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT Monday through Friday.
