UW Student-Athletes Encourage State Residents to Get a Flu Shot
Public Service Announcements from the Department of Health Services feature Badger Basketball and Hockey Players
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has partnered with three UW Student-Athletes, to help encourage people to protect themselves and others this flu season, by getting a flu shot.
“The flu can be deadly, particularly for infants and children, and those with other serious health issues,” said DHS Secretary Linda Seemeyer. “Getting a flu shot not only helps protect you from serious illness, it also protects those around you. I applaud the student athletes who gave their time to help spread the message.”
“We know these student-athletes have talent on the court and on the ice, and they’re just as talented in front of the camera. We’re thrilled that they would use their talents to promote good health among state residents,” said Karen McKeown, State Health Officer.
The public service announcements are part of the department’s “Who Can You Protect?” campaign to remind state residents that flu shots are safe and effective for everyone 6 months old and older, and that by getting a flu shot a person protects themselves and people around them from serious illness.
While these public service announcements should appeal to state residents of all ages, the flu shot is important for college students who will be heading home for break soon. They can protect themselves, their classmates, and their families by getting a flu shot. Students, like everyone, should also see if they need any additional vaccines or boosters.
Besides the vaccine, there are simple steps we all can take to reduce our chances of becoming ill and spreading illness to others:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with your upper sleeve, and try to avoid touching your face with your hand. If you use a tissue, throw it away after one use.
- Use your own drinking cups and straws.
- Avoid being exposed to people who are sick with flu-like symptoms.
- Eat nutritious meals, get plenty of rest and do not smoke.
- Frequently clean commonly touched surfaces (e.g., doorknobs, refrigerator handle, telephone, faucets).
- If you’re sick, stay home, get rest, drink plenty of liquids, and avoid using alcohol and tobacco.
