Domestic Partnerships
Effective August 1, 2009, Chapter 69, Wis. Stats., designated domestic
partnership documents as "vital records" and allowed same-sex
partners in Wisconsin to establish a Declaration of Domestic Partnership.
The first working day that these partnership applications were accepted at
County Clerk offices was Monday, August 3, 2009.
All domestic partnerships filed with the State Vital Records Office during 2009 and 2010 are included in
the tables below. The tables also show all filed terminations of domestic partnership (there were none in 2009).
Chapter 69 gives the State Registrar responsibility for the registration of
all domestic partnerships, as well as the registration of domestic
partnership terminations. Chapter 770, Wis. Stats., (Domestic Partnership
Law) specifies the process for registering domestic partnerships between two
people of the same sex.
