Obesity Prevention Planning

Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention Program

The Nutrition and Physical Activity Program provides statewide leadership to decrease overweight and obesity, increase physical activity and improve nutrition. Located in the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Program and its partners have developed and are implementing the Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan to accomplish the overall goal of preventing obesity and chronic disease.

Got Veggies New Got Veggies?  

Got Veggies? is a garden-based nutrition education curriculum created with the goal of getting children to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Got Veggies? features seven full lesson plans that are aligned with  Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards for Nutrition, Health, Science, and other related subjects.  A series of shorter garden-based activities are also included, as well as fun recipes and helpful tips for cooking and eating in the garden.  This curriculum provides an all around great way to nurture students’ interest in growing and eating fresh fruits and vegetables!

Worksite Kit

New The 2010 Worksite Wellness Resource Kit - The latest edition of the resource kit was completed in December 2010, with additional information added based on input from worksites.  There is a new section on substance abuse and expanded information on communication and evaluation methods.  There are also updated and new links to resources that would be helpful for any wellness program.  

The kit is a tool to assist worksites with implementing evidence-based strategies and walks users through the process of developing a worksite wellness program. 

What works in Early Care and Education What Works in Early Care and Education (Child care) (PDF, 207 KB) is a two-page summary of evidence-based and promising strategies that focus on helping young children eat healthier and be more active in the Early Care and Education (child care) setting.  The strategies were developed after reviewing  and summarizing recommendations from several national reports.

This new section will take you to information that may be helpful to local coalitions.  Included in this section is information related to activities in the State Nutrition and Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention Program and the ARRA (stimulus funding) grants.  This include general information about the programs and resource materials and training opportunities associated with the programs.

 

Obesity Report Cover Obesity, Nutrition and Physical Activity in Wisconsin - Illustrates the problem of overweight and obesity in Wisconsin adults and youth and describes the consequences of the problem. It also provides rates for individual health behaviors related to obesity and lists some resources that organizations and communities can use to support healthy lifestyles in Wisconsin residents. The accompanying Executive Summary provides an overview of key data from the full report and provides recommendations to assist efforts to counteract obesity in Wisconsin.

WI State Plan

Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan - The Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan is a long range planning document focusing on the best ways to be active, eat well and prevent obesity.  A complete copy of the plan and an executive summary are available.

    Recent topics of interest:

    Healthiest Wisconsin 2020:  Everyone Living Better, Longer represents the third decade of statewide community health improvement planning designed to benefit the health of everyone in Wisconsin and the communities in which we live, play, work and learn.  More than 1,500 people from all walks of life helped develop this plan.  An even larger community of partners is needed to implement it over the decade.

    The Epidemic of Chronic Disease in Wisconsin (PDF, 6.29 MB) - This 2010 report provides information on the health and economic impact of Chronic Disease in Wisconsin.

    Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Kit Ten Steps to Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Centers Resource Kit (PDF, 944 KB) - A resource kit to assist child care providers and community groups to implement strategies to promote, protect and support breastfeeding women.  The kit includes a self-appraisal tool and information and resources for planning and implementing action plan based on the ten steps.  Child care center staff can earn continuing education units.
    Active Communities Resource Kit Active Community Environments (ACEs) Resource Kit - A tool to assist communities with implementing strategies that have been proven to be effective in creating environments that encourage physical activity.  The kit walks you through a six-step process for developing an Active Community Environment initiative.
    Weighing and Measuring in Schools Kit

    Weighing and Measuring in Schools (PDF, 1.69 MB) - This document has been developed with the following objectives: 1) to help schools to be better informed when making the decision of whether or not to weigh and measure students; 2) to provide guidance and policy recommendations to schools that choose to weigh and measure students: and 3) to provide resources for schools to create environments supportive of healthy lifestyles.  To order a hard copy, contact Mary Pesik

    Got Dirt Kit Got Dirt? Toolkit (PDF, 2.7 MB) - The Got Dirt? toolkit is designed to provide simple, step-by-step plans for starting school, community, and child care gardens.  Never gardened? That's okay…the kit contains tips from garden experts and garden success stories from around Wisconsin. 
    What Works Document What Works is a series of two to four page papers summarizing evidence-based and promising strategies that focus on helping people eat healthier and be more active.  The current series includes:
