Lead Project Designer

A lead project designer certification is for a person who designs complex lead abatement projects. They also write occupant protection plans and abatement reports.

Description

In Wisconsin, a person must be certified to work with lead-based paint. A lead project designer certification is for a person who designs complex lead abatement projects. They also write occupant protection plans and abatement reports.

Lead project designers must be associated with a certified lead company when doing lead work.

Duration

Two years. A four-hour refresher training is required every two years to renew.

Fees

$375 for two years. State and local government workers don’t have to pay the fee.

Prerequisites

You must be 18 or older and meet one of the following:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree or professional certification in engineering, architecture, or related building construction and design, with at least one year of experience in building design, construction, or a related field.
  • Have at least four years of experience in building construction, design, or a related field.

You also must complete the following training courses:

  • The one-day initial lead-safe renovation course
  • The one-day initial lead abatement work course
  • The two-day initial lead abatement supervision course
  • The one-day initial lead project designer course. This course is not currently offered by a Wisconsin provider. You may apply with equivalent training from an out-of-state training provider with accreditation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or an EPA-authorized state lead program. An additional processing fee of $25 is required from applicants with out-of-state training.
