Governor’s Task Force on Healthcare Workforce

Health care is a high-need area of our state's workforce the State of Wisconsin is working to strengthen and support. To recognize the importance of the challenges facing our state's workforce Governor Evers declared 2024 the Year of the Worker to build on efforts to bolster the state’s workforce in high-demand, high-need industries. The declaration supports a focus on new efforts to build a workforce prepared to meet the needs of a 21st-century economy, including finding sustainable solutions to retain, attract, and train talented workers to address our state’s workforce shortages.

On January 29, 2024, Governor Tony Evers signed Executive Order #220 (PDF) to create the Governor’s Task Force on the Healthcare Workforce.

The task force was charged with:

  • Studying the workforce challenges facing the state’s health care system, including recruitment and retention
  • Identifying ways to improve patient care and alleviate the burdens on the health care workforce
  • Exploring educational and training pathways to grow a sustainable health care workforce
  • Creating an action plan with solutions related to workforce development, industry innovation, education, and training for consideration in the governor’s 2025-27 state budget

The task force delivered a full report on August 19, 2024:

  • Providing 10 recommendations with 26 action items
  • Representing a variety of policies and programs to address issues including education, training, recruitment, and retention of health care workers
  • Providing solutions to Wisconsin’s health care industry challenges and recommendations to consider in the upcoming 2025-2027 state budget
