La Crosse encephalitis virus is rare in Wisconsin, and few cases have been reported in recent years.

Historically, most cases of La Crosse encephalitis were reported from the upper Midwestern states, but recently, more cases have been reported from the mid-Atlantic and southeastern states.

Unlike most other arboviruses, La Crosse encephalitis is most common in children under 16 years old.

People of any age, however, can become infected.

La Crosse encephalitis is preventable.
