How does my child use Katie Beckett Medicaid?

Once your child has completed the Katie Beckett Medicaid application process and been approved, your child will receive a ForwardHealth Medicaid ID card in the mail. This usually arrives around the same time as the letter telling you they have met eligibility for Katie Beckett Medicaid.

  • The card is used the same way any insurance card is used to get health-related services and equipment. This includes things like preventative health care, supports, and specialty care.
  • Keep your ForwardHealth card unless you are sent a new card. New cards are not sent out when someone gets a new form of Medicaid. If your child already had a ForwardHealth card, they should use that card for Katie Beckett Medicaid.
  • You can now request a new copy of your forward health card online using ACCESS (ACCESS in Spanish). You can also call Katie Beckett Medicaid at 888-786-3246 or email DHSKatieBeckett@dhs.wisconsin.gov.

Katie Beckett Medicaid may cover medical services for your child along with additional medically necessary services, therapies, supplies, and equipment. Always ask your child’s provider if they are a certified Wisconsin Medicaid provider who accepts fee-for-service Medicaid. Keep in mind:

  • If your child sees a provider who is not Medicaid certified, you are responsible for payments.
  • Many out-of-state providers near Wisconsin’s borders are Wisconsin Medicaid certified. Ask your provider if they are certified or call Member Services at 800-362-3002 to confirm.

Full information on covered services is available in the ForwardHealth Enrollment and Benefits Handbook, P-00079.

Katie Beckett Medicaid does not cover

  • Respite or child care
  • Home or vehicle modifications
  • Computers, air conditioners, or exercise equipment
  • Experimental or cosmetic procedures
  • Non-medically necessary interventions such as hippotherapy or aqua therapy

Keep in mind:

  • If your child sees a provider who is not enrolled in Medicaid, you are responsible for payments.
  • Many out-of-state providers near Wisconsin’s borders are enrolled in Wisconsin Medicaid. Ask your provider if they are certified or call Member Services at 800-362-3002 to confirm.

The ForwardHealth Enrollment and Benefits Handbook, P-00079 has all the information you need, but here are some helpful reminders.

Katie Beckett Medicaid can work together with private insurance. This could be insurance through an employer or the health insurance marketplace. Here's how it works:

  1. Private insurance is used first.
    • If your child's private health insurance is through a health maintenance organization (HMO), the health care provider or facility must be in the HMO's network.
    • If private insurance does not cover a service, Katie Beckett Medicaid may not cover it either.
  2. Katie Becket Medicaid always pays last.

Always ask your private insurance network what is covered, and always ask ForwardHealth Member Services what is covered by Medicaid.
