Intoxicated Driver Program: Client Portal

The Intoxicated Driver Program protects and promotes individual and community health and safety by addressing concerning substance use habits and encouraging safe driving behaviors.

Assessment

People convicted of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated must undergo an assessment of their alcohol or other drug use at an approved assessment agency.

The assessment follows a structured interview process. Most assessments are completed in one hour. The assessor may consult records, reports, and information provided from relatives or other people as part of the assessment.

You should abstain from any use of alcohol and non-prescribed drugs for at least 24 hours before your assessment.

Contact your local assessment agency if you have questions or concerns about the assessment process.

If you choose to seek a second opinion on your assessment, you may do so through any approved assessment agency in the directory at your own expense.

Driver safety plan

The driver safety plan (DSP) outlines what must be done to restore driving privileges in response to the findings of the assessment. These actions are personalized to the client's health and safety needs. They may include:

• Attending a traffic safety program (or similar education program). Participants discuss in a group their substance use habits and ways to make changes to help avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
• Completing a comprehensive substance use treatment program. This may mean being admitted to a facility for up to 30 days.
• Having a psychiatric evaluation.

Each driver safety plan has a maximum duration of one year, with a one-time four-month extension. Extension requests must be made prior to the driver safety plan expiration.

Client rights

You have a right to appeal your assessment finding or driver safety plan recommendation.

Agencies providing Intoxicated Driver Program services must inform clients of their rights at the start of services. You can ask to see an agency's client rights policy at any time.
