Plan for Integration Worksheet 2: Guided Team Discussion

This is a worksheet from the Peer Professional Employer Toolkit. Print this worksheet to help your organization plan for integration with a guided team discussion.

Developing a plan to integrate a peer professional into existing teaming is an important task of preparation (Cooper et al., 2024; Gillard et al., 2013; Mutschler et al., 2022; SAMHSA, 2023). Engage a guided team discussion to begin planning for how peer recovery support services will be integrated into routine teaming. This discussion may involve one or more meetings. Note: this activity is to be completed before the peer professional is hired and onboarded.

Meeting roles

  • Facilitator: leadership team member or supervisor; ensure inclusive sharing by all staff (if the facilitator is the supervisor, plan to share results of guided discussion back to leadership team)
  • Notetaker: document discussions for future reference
  • Participants: staff share perspectives on teaming and operations

Meeting agenda

  1. Clarify roles and responsibilities
    1. How will peer recovery support services fit into our current teaming structure, procedures, or processes?
    2. What tasks might we assign the peer professional that fall within their scope of practice?
    3. What tasks fall outside the peer professional’s scope of practice that we need to ensure we do not assign?
    4. How can we clearly distinguish between clinical, case management, and peer professional roles?
  2. Consider workflows
    1. Are there any documentation expectations or team workflows that may conflict with recovery principles?
    2. How do we ensure that the peer professional can practice without being assigned inappropriate tasks?
    3. How will we ensure the peer professional has input into service design or teaming processes?
  3. Create inclusive teaming
    1. How will we communicate that lived experience is a form of professional expertise?
    2. How will we incorporate recovery principles into our discussions as a way to signal support for peer recovery support services?
    3. How will we model inclusivity by regularly engaging the peer professional in discussions?
  4. Continue discussion
    1. What regular check-ins will we schedule into our teaming with the peer professional?
    2. How will we collect and respond to feedback about the peer professional integration process?
    3. What signs will we look for to know the peer professional is delivering services within the scope of practice?
    4. How will we know if the peer professional is delivering services outside of the scope of practice?
