Community Support Programs: Information for Participants

Community Support Programs (CSP) eligibility, services, and enrollment process may vary as they are unique to each CSP team.

Eligibility

To receive CSP services, people must: 

  • Be diagnosed with a serious mental illness. Serious mental illnesses include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, delusional disorder, and major depressive disorder.
  • Live in a county that has a CSP team.
  • Complete a screening and assessment through their county CSP team to determine whether their behavior and challenges with daily living qualify them for CSP services.

Services

CSP services help meet a participant's unique needs and goals. CSP services may include case management, medication management, psychoeducation, psychosocial rehabilitation, peer supports. Expand one of the following sections to learn more about CSP services.

Coordination of services results in better outcomes. This service may include:

  • Connecting participants with needed mental health supports.
  • Providing participants information on other wellness supports in their community.
     

Medication can reduce symptoms and improve a participant's quality of life. This service may include:

  • Evaluating the need for medications.
  • Providing prescriptions for needed medications.
  • Monitoring the participant's use of the needed medication.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of the needed medications.
     

Helping participants understand their condition makes recovery possible. This service may include:

  • Providing mental health information.
  • Explaining mental health treatment options.
  • Teaching skills to manage mental health symptoms and reduce stress.
  • Encouraging family involvement by including family members in the education process.
  • Promoting open communication between the participant, their family, and treatment team. 

Skill building supports recovery. This service may include: 

  • Providing participants training in activities of daily living.
  • Helping participants find and maintain a job.
  • Helping participants develop and maintain relationships with family, friends, and neighbors.
  • Helping participants develop and grow hobbies and other recreational activities.

The attention of someone who understands because of their own mental health experiences can help others in their recovery journey. This service may include:

  • Offering opportunities to connect with people with similar life experiences.
  • Improving serious mental illness symptoms.
  • Building social skills.
