Making it easier to get help
In 2020, the Federal Communications Commission adopted a new rule to establish 988 as the three-digit calling code for a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline so Americans who need help can more easily connect with counselors. The rule requires all phone service providers to activate the 988 calling code by July 16, 2022. Calls to 988 will then be routed to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
As Wisconsin prepares for this transition, we have formed a 988 Planning Coalition to advise us on issues related to coordination across call centers and other services (examples 211 and 911), capacity, funding, and marketing.
This group has been meeting since April 2021.
Please continue to call 800-273-8255 (TALK) for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline until further notice.
