Lead-Safe Wisconsin: Lead Certification Exam Information and Schedule

If you’re applying for lead abatement supervisor, hazard investigator, inspector, or risk assessor, you have up to six months after you complete your initial training to pass the state certification exam. During that time, you’ll have an interim certification so you can work.

You can take the exam online or in person. You have three tries to pass it.

How to register

To register for the exam, you must apply for certification through our online application. You can also mail us an initial lead application or Application for Initial Lead Abatement Supervisor Certification, F-02996 (PDF). You’ll choose the exam location and pay at the same time you apply for certification.

If you’d like to take the exam in person, we’ll register you for the next available exam date in your preferred city. Registration closes two weeks before the exam date.

About one week before the exam, you’ll receive a confirmation letter with:

• The exam date.
• The exam time.
• The exam address.
• Details on what to bring with you.

If you need to reschedule, call us at 608-261-6876. We won’t give refunds for those who don’t show up on their scheduled date.

Studying for the exam

• Lead Hazard Investigator and Risk Assessor

If you’re applying for lead risk assessor, use the study guides for both lead supervisor and lead hazard investigator and risk assessor.

What if I don’t pass my exam?

If you don’t pass the exam with a score of 70% or higher, you can take it two more times, although you must pass it within six months of completing training. The exam costs $75 each time you take it. You can use the shorter Register to Reschedule Lead (Pb) Certification Exam form, F-01313 (Word) to register for subsequent exams.

If you don’t pass after six months, or if you fail all three attempts, your interim certification may be revoked. Your application for initial lead abatement supervisor, hazard investigator, inspector, or risk assessor certification will be denied. If you’re denied initial lead abatement supervisor certification, you’ll be certified as a lead abatement worker. If you’re denied hazard investigator, inspector, or risk assessor certification, you’ll be certified as a lead sampling technician.

Twelve months after your lead abatement supervisor certification is denied, you can reapply after retaking the initial training. The same is true for hazard investigator and inspector certification. You can reapply for risk assessor certification after 12 months, too, but you must retake both the initial hazard investigator and initial inspector training.
