Keeping your child’s Katie Beckett Medicaid coverage

How often do I have to renew my child’s Katie Beckett Medicaid coverage?

An open calendar book with a pen and a post it note.

Katie Beckett Medicaid coverage needs to be renewed each year. Some renewals require simple paperwork completion. These are called annual renewals. Other renewals require a more in-depth review called a disability redetermination.

Your child will get annual renewal information in the mail with instructions approximately 45 days before it is due. Your letter will tell you if you need to take action to renew coverage. It is very important to keep your address and phone number updated with Katie Beckett Medicaid so you can be reached when it is time for your child’s renewal. If you can’t be reached and don’t complete your child’s renewal, your child may lose their Medicaid coverage.

Every child enrolled in Katie Beckett Medicaid requires a disability redetermination every one to seven years depending on their medical diagnosis. This is called the diary date. Letters are mailed out 90 days before your child’s diary date to start this process. This may require an eligibility interview with you and a review of your child's current medical records. These interviews are completed by a Katie Beckett Medicaid eligibility specialist online via a video call, or in your home in special circumstances if you request it.

The letter about requiring a disability redetermination will include a medical provider form and a release of information form. Both forms need to be completed and returned before the eligibility visit can be scheduled. Return the completed forms can be returned by:

After your forms are received, an eligibility specialist will reach out to schedule your child’s eligibility interview.

If your child has already had a children's functional screen completed by another children's long-term support program in the last year, you may not need to complete an eligibility interview with a Katie Beckett eligibility specialist. If you aren’t sure if your child will need an eligibility interview, you can ask a Katie Beckett Medicaid eligibility specialist by calling 888-786-3246.

Please note: even if your child doesn’t require an eligibility interview, you will still need to return the completed medical provider and release of information forms to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS). These are required to complete your child’s application for the renewal of Katie Beckett Medicaid benefits.

Helpful tips

Here are some helpful tips that will help you complete your child’s renewal:

Read the instructions on each page of the renewal tool!

The instructions tell you what information each section and field of the renewal pages are asking for.

Check to make sure all the following are included and correct:

  • Parent/Guardian names and contact information
  • Mailing address
  • Correct phone number
  • Correct email address
  • Child’s living arrangement (Are they still living in the home with you?)
  • Income of child, earned or unearned

“HOUSEHOLD” means your child for purposes of Katie Beckett renewals.

  • If you are only renewing benefits for Katie Beckett Medicaid, the child is considered the entire household.
  • You do not have to fill in information for every sibling or family member living in the household for a Katie Beckett-only benefits renewal.
  • You do not need to provide income information on the parent/guardians who live with the child. Only the child’s income is considered for eligibility in Katie Beckett Medicaid.
    • It is uncommon for a child to have income that exceeds the income limits for eligibility. If you are concerned about this being an issue for your child, please call an eligibility specialist at 888-786-3246.
  • If you are renewing other benefits, such as BadgerCare or FoodShare, in addition  to your child’s Katie Beckett Medicaid at the same time, you will need to provide additional information on the people living in your household other than just the Katie Beckett member.

Fill in contact information for the parent/guardian(s) so that you can talk to Member Services about your Katie Beckett Medicaid member.

If no parent/guardian information is entered, you will not be able to talk to Member Services about your child when you call with questions.

Answer the questions on the renewal tool about the child whose Katie Beckett Medicaid benefits are being renewed.

Remember that the child is considered the “household” for purposes of renewing benefits. Katie Beckett Medicaid does not need detailed information on every person that lives in the same house as the Katie Beckett member.
