Peer Professional Employer Toolkit

Exploration Worksheet 2: Consider Needs, Fit, and Capacity

This is one of three exploration worksheets from the Peer Professional Employer Toolkit.

Instructions: An important task of exploration is considering how the new service will meet service participants’ needs, fit with your organization’s priorities, and work in your organization’s capacity (Metz & Louison, 2019). Print this worksheet, address the following questions as a team, and document the results of discussions. Note: some questions involve information gathering, so completing this worksheet may require more than one meeting.

Service participant needs

  • Who is the identified population of concern and what are the needs of this population?

  • How do individuals and community members perceive their need? What do they believe will be helpful? How were community members engaged to assess their perception of need?

  • Is there evidence that peer recovery support will address the specific needs identified?

  • If peer recovery support is implemented, what can potentially change for this population?

Fit of peer recovery support

  • How does peer recovery support fit your organization’s vision, mission, and priorities?

  • Specifically, how does peer recovery support fit with family and community values in the impacted community, including the values of culturally and linguistically specific populations?

  • How might peer recovery support fit or intersect with existing initiatives currently being implemented in your organization?

  • How might peer recovery support fit or intersect with existing recovery-oriented policies or practices?

Organizational capacity

  • Are peer professionals available with a similar cultural and language match to the population that will be served? To what extent might there be existing relationships in the community?

  • To what extent might existing initiatives complement implementation of peer recovery support services? Given everything going on in your organization at this time, is there enough bandwidth to develop a new service?

  • What administrative policies and procedures will need to be developed or refined for successful peer recovery support implementation? (See “develop supportive organizational policies” in the Preparation section of the toolkit for a preview.)

  • If your organization seeks to deliver peer recovery support services as a Medicaid-reimbursable service, how will Wis. Admin. Code ch. DHS 72 inform changes to administrative policies and procedures?

  • To what extent is your upper management knowledgeable about and in support of implementing peer recovery support services?
