Wisconsin EMS patches had remained unchanged since the 1970s. In February 2010, Wisconsin EMS Association (WEMSA) conference attendees chose six semi-finalists out of over 40 entries that were submitted during a contest to replace the then current patch design. Those six designs were presented to the Wisconsin EMS Advisory Board, which selected three for final consideration. The final decision was made by Wisconsin EMS Office staff based on design, colors, and universal appeal. As WEMSA donated the grand prize, no costs were incurred by the Wisconsin EMS Office in this process.
Stefan Peterson of Mazomanie submitted the winning design. Stefan volunteers with Waunakee Area EMS as an Intermediate Technician. He is also a freelance graphic designer.
Stefan put a great deal of thought into the design and its meanings. The rolling fields highlight our landscape and the predominantly rural roots of our EMS system. An urban/rural skyline speaks to the diversity of the communities we serve. Likewise, the Rod of Asclepius on the Star of Life leans slightly forward to suggest action, energy, and the progressive nature of our state's emergency care. Going with the traditions of our state, the patch is colored with a predominance of green and gold.
With the exception of Tactical EMS, all levels will use one standard patch with the addition of a rocker to designate the licensing level of the individual. The Tactical EMS patch is designed with subdued color.
There is no statewide requirement to replace any current patches with the new patch.
