Federal government shutdown – CSFP is operating
DHS is closely monitoring the current federal government shutdown. Our goal is to keep the public informed, especially our CSFP recipients. Even though the federal government has shutdown, DHS wants to assure our partners that funding is available for the immediate future. DHS will share information as it becomes available.
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) works to improve the health of income eligible persons at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA foods. CSFP is distributed monthly to approved participants through community action agencies, food banks, and other nonprofit organizations.
The CSFP package includes fruits and juice, vegetables, cheese, milk, meat, poultry and fish, plant-based proteins, cereals, and pasta, and rice. Nutrition education is also provided to participants to help educate participants on the value of a nutritious diet to improve health.
Do I qualify?
To be eligible to receive CSFP benefits, you must:
- Live in Wisconsin.
- Be aged 60 or older.
- Make a certain amount of money (see table on this page).
Wisconsin allows for automatic CSFP eligibility, regardless of income, for current participation in one of these federal programs:
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) known as FoodShare in Wisconsin
- Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Low Income Subsidy Program
- Medicare Savings Programs, P-10062 (PDF)
This table is effective as of March 7, 2025, and is based on 150% of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2025 Poverty Guidelines. When reviewing your eligibility, use total gross income (before taxes and deductions) of all household members.

Other food programs
Call 211 for information and referrals to local services, such as food pantries.
- You can participate in CSFP and also receive food from the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP).
- You may also be eligible for the FoodShare program. Learn how to apply for FoodShare benefits. If you live in Milwaukee County, refer to the Milwaukee enrollment services.
- In some areas, the Senior Farmer Market Nutrition Program is available from June 1 through October 31.
