EMS: Educational Requirements for 2020–2023 Late Renewal and Reinstatement

2023-2026 EMS Renewal will be opening in Spring of 2023

All EMS providers will be notified via the email address listed within their own E-License account when the 2023-2026 Renewal Form is available.  

 

Things you can do to prepare for 2023-2026 EMS renewal period:

  • Make sure your current contact information is correct within your E-license account
  • Make sure you can access your E-License account, and that you know your password
  • Make sure you have a valid CPR certification
  • Make sure you have a valid ACLS certification for Intermediate and Paramedic
  • Make sure you have your Continuing Education and Refresher supporting documents

How DHS Emergency Order 21 could affect you

To be eligible for renewal of your certification or licensure you must complete your initial or refresher training requirement information under Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.09 for the 2023-2026 licensure cycle triennium from October 1, 2020, through June 30, 2023, based on the changes that were issued under the COVID-19 Emergency Order #21.

Following are the 2023-2026 renewal requirements for Wisconsin EMS Practitioners:
Refresher courses taught through an approved Wisconsin training center and listed on the EMS Refresher Course List fulfill Wisconsin refresher requirements, as do Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) accredited refresher courses.
Flexible continuing education may be obtained through any format, but needs to meet the requirements set forth in Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.07.

To renew an EMR certification, individuals must complete 18 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin Code § DHS 110.17(1). Individuals must complete all educational requirements and refreshers before submitting a Late Renewal or Reinstatement application.

To fulfill the EMR continuing education requirements, complete ONE of the following within the appropriate timeframe for your Late Renewal or Reinstatement application process:

To renew an EMT license, individuals must complete 30 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.17(1). Individuals must complete all educational requirements and refreshers before submitting a Late Renewal or Reinstatement application. Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.07

To fulfill the EMT continuing education requirements, complete ONE of the following within the appropriate timeframe for your Late Renewal or Reinstatement application process:

To renew an AEMT License, individuals must complete 42 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin Code § DHS 110.17(1). Individuals must complete all educational requirements and refreshers before submitting a Late Renewal or Reinstatement application. Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.07

To fulfill the EMT continuing education requirements, complete ONE of the following within the appropriate timeframe for your Late Renewal or Reinstatement application process:

To renew an Intermediate License, individuals must complete 48 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification and ACLS at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.17(1). Individuals must complete all educational requirements and refreshers before submitting a Late Renewal or Reinstatement application. Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.07

To fulfill the Intermediate continuing education requirements, complete ONE of the following within the appropriate timeframe for your Late Renewal or Reinstatement application process:

To renew a Paramedic License, individuals must complete 48 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification and ACLS at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.17(1). Individuals must complete all educational requirements and refreshers before submitting a Late Renewal or Reinstatement application. Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.07

To fulfill the Paramedic continuing education requirements, complete ONE of the following within the appropriate timeframe for your Late Renewal or Reinstatement application process:

To renew a Critical Care Paramedic Endorsement, individuals must complete 72 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification and ACLS at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin Code § DHS 110.17(1). Individuals must complete all educational requirements and refreshers before submitting a Late Renewal or Reinstatement application. Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.07

To fulfill the Critical Care Paramedic continuing education requirements, complete ONE of the following within the appropriate timeframe for your Late Renewal or Reinstatement application process:
