Listed on this page are the renewal training requirements for Wisconsin Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Practitioners for the 2020-2023 Late Renewal and Reinstatement cycle.
Listed are the minimum hours for the refresher courses as approved through the Wisconsin EMS Section. Refresher courses taught through an approved Wisconsin training center and listed on the EMS Refresher Course List fulfill refresher requirements, as do Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) accredited refresher courses.
Flexible continuing education may be obtained through any format, but needs to meet the requirements set forth in Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.07.
All continuing education is a personal responsibility. For the 2020-2023 certification or license late renewal or reinstatement process, your initial or continuing education requirements need to be completed:
- Between July 1, 2018 and March 31, 2021 for late renewal.
- Between July 1, 2018 and September 30, 2022 for reinstatement.
Individuals must complete all educational requirements and refreshers before submitting a Late Renewal or Reinstatement application. After completing the late renewal or reinstatement process, you will still need to complete additional continuing education to renew for the 2023-2026 cycle.
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), 18 Hours
To renew an EMR certification, individuals must complete 18 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin Code § DHS 110.17(1). Individuals must complete all educational requirements and refreshers before submitting a Late Renewal or Reinstatement application.
To fulfill the EMR continuing education requirements, complete ONE of the following within the appropriate timeframe for your Late Renewal or Reinstatement application process:
- Initial EMR or EMT Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
- EMR Refresher Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
- National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) EMR Refresher, F-01935 (PDF)
- EMR Alternative Flexible Refresher, F-01934 (PDF)
- EMR NREMT Assessment Exam
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), 30 Hours
To renew an EMT license, individuals must complete 30 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.17(1). Individuals must complete all educational requirements and refreshers before submitting a Late Renewal or Reinstatement application. Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.07
To fulfill the EMT continuing education requirements, complete ONE of the following within the appropriate timeframe for your Late Renewal or Reinstatement application process:
- Initial EMT or AEMT course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
- Didactic portion of the Initial Paramedic Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
- EMT Refresher Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
- National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) EMT Refresher, F-01933 (PDF)

- EMT National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Assessment Exam
Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), 42 Hours
To renew an AEMT License, individuals must complete 42 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin Code § DHS 110.17(1). To fulfill the EMT continuing education requirements, complete ONE of the following within the appropriate timeframe for your Late Renewal or Reinstatement application process:
- Initial AEMT or Paramedic Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
- 30-hour EMT Refresher Course AND ONE of the following:
- 12-hour AEMT Refresher Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
- 12-hours of continuing education approved by the service Medical Director
- Didactic portion of the Initial Paramedic Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
- AEMT Refresher Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center

Intermediate, 48 Hours
To renew an Intermediate License, individuals must complete 48 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification and ACLS at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin. Code § DHS 110.17(1). Paramedic, 48 Hours

Paramedic with Critical Care Endorsement, 72 Hours
To renew a Critical Care Paramedic Endorsement, individuals must complete 72 hours of continuing education. In addition, individuals must also hold current CPR certification and ACLS at the professional level by an organization specified under Wis. Admin Code § DHS 110.17(1). - Initial Critical Care Paramedic Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
- 48-hour Paramedic Refresher Course AND 24-hour Critical Care Refresher Course at an approved Wisconsin EMS Training Center
